Rest is Not Idleness

Saturday appears to be the day I look forward to every week. On the dawns of Sunday my heart automatically starts to count down. As it throbs, my mind becomes brilliant on the hitch to carry out the week’s activities. I love work with all my passion. My spirit is vexed when I am unoccupied and redundant. I love going to bed exhausted and fulfilled. Achievements give me contentment of a certain kind that I cannot explain.

Douglas Murray McGregor (1906 – 1 October 1964) was a management professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management and president of Antioch College from 1948 to 1954. In his endeavors, he developed what is famously known as theory X and theory Y of employees’ management. He argued that people who belong to group X don’t like work. They are naturally lazy. They need close supervision and monitoring to perform their duties while group Y are people who will look for something to do even if there seem to be nothing to do. Theory Y marries with Abraham’s Maslow theory of hierarchy of needs where the motivation to do work is from within. People work to meet their needs ranging from physiological to self-actualization. Maslow argued that meeting one needs will result to the person working towards satisfying another need of a higher hierarchy and the satisfied need doesn’t motivate one to work. Group Y people are naturally industrious, goal-oriented, visionary and aggressive.

With the above discourse about the two theories, you can speculate where I belong. Nevertheless, I love Saturdays for several reasons. Since the time I got into busy schedules, I have always found bliss and pleasure in celebrating this day as one that cannot be compared with the others. Truth be told, though I enjoy and delight in work and achieving more and more, I need not to take life too serious to take a break. I agree with John Lubbock who unmistakably stated, “Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” I usually ask myself what may be more important between work and rest, I discovered from Alan Cohen who said “There is virtue in work and there is virtue in rest. Use both and overlook neither.” None is disputable.

If rest and work are both essential, what is my priority? I would say with all my confidence that work is my priority. After work, I would rest. Taking a day to breath deep, taking a pose to evaluate my moves, to reflect of God’s goodness, to celebrate His tender mercies and his loving-kindness, to refresh my heart and my mind, to get rejuvenation, and by the end of the rest, to emerge strengthened.

When I was looking into the concept of rest, I discovered that it originated from God, who is the great monarch of the universe. The great Monarch, declared a day of rest in which all human being were supposed to rest from all their labor. Indicated comprehensibly, God evidently understood that men needed rest. He separated the seventh-day, for the rest. When I therefore rest, I do it without any guilt and regret because I know apart from relaxing; I am doing God’s will.

Many people are lost in the rush of life. Does life has any meaning? Is it all about rush? Is life all about work? Are people victims to their own pursuits? Will life not transcend above the normal life pattern of going to school, getting a job, buying a house, marrying, getting children, taking them to school, retiring from work and dying? Is there any meaning people find in life beyond normal pattern? Many people die with unfinished God’s assignments, unleashed potential, unfulfilled duties and hearts that had not poured love to humanity. People imagine how they can own property and amass wealth for themselves. Many young talented and gifted people cannot realize their aspirations simple because of the rush. There is need to stop the rush!

Rest. Take a deep breath and relax. Take a moment and interact with yourself, hold a conversation with yourself and you get to know that you know little about yourself. “Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”
